CCA also promotes friendships amongst LHSians as they learn, play and grow together. Through CCA, LHSians discover their interests and talents while developing values and competencies that will prepare them for a rapidly changing world. Lighthouse School introduced Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) in 2019. This is a 3-tier programme where the school creates opportunities for every student to be a leader. Swimming Programme is part of the PE curriculum where students are grouped based on their level of confidence and attend a 10-week swimming programme. Students are also supported by either in class or out of class support by the Speech and Language Therapist (serving students with hearing loss or visual impairment), Audiologist (serving both hearing loss or visual impairment), Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Counsellor and Job Coach. These provisions facilitate and enhance their learning. Students with hearing loss are engaged through interactive lessons with the use of devices like SMART boards, iPads and computers. Apart from sign language, Lighthouse School also supports students with hearing loss through other forms of communication such as Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) as well as Total Communication (TC) that incorporates all means of communication formal signs, natural gestures, fingerspelling, body language, listening, lipreading and speech. Students with hearing loss are taught by teaching professionals trained in Signing Exact English (SEE) and/or SgSL Level 1 to 3. Lessons on SgSL and ICT are also incorporated in the timetable. Spoken and written language used by the majority in mainstream society is viewed as a second language. Lighthouse School currently uses the Bilingual-Bicultural (Bi-Bi) approach, where the Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) is the natural first language for our students with hearing loss.
